What is a Doula?

A doula is a trained support person who provides emotional, physical, and informational care through fertility, pregnancy, birth, postpartum ,and loss.

Doula care enchances your experience and complements medical support, but does not replace clinical care or medical providers.

Why the Doula Support Matters

  • Births attended by doulas were 47% less to have a cesarean.
  • Vaginal births after cesareans were 2.5 more times common.
  • Preterm, early preterm, and indicated preterm delivery rates were reduced among patients receiving doula care from rates of 7.2%, 1.2%, and 3.3% vs 10.8%, 3.3% and 5.5%.
  • Those supported by a doula had lower odds of postpartum anxiety or depression.
  • Doulas have been linked with higher rates of breastfeeding initiation and engagement with postpartum care.
  • Those with doulas were four times less likely to have a low birth weight baby.
  • Continuous support is tied to fewer interventions, shorter labor, and more satisfying birth experiences.
